Embryo Transfer

Today was our Embryo Transfer, or in other words where they implanted the embryos into my uterus. The drive into Chicago was not too bad, except for some of the traffic. The worst part was when we got there. In my instructions for pre-transfer I am instructed to drink water/liquid when we were halfway there. I had Gatorade in a two liter Gatorade bottle, I ended up drinking most of the bottle. Meaning I really had to go when we got there. It took 30 minutes for them to bring me back, but thankfully once they did they let me empty my bladder a little. Yay!

Then the embryologist came in and talked to us about the embryos, one was in early blastocyst and the other two were compounding, which is pre-blastocyst. The optimum is when the embryo is in blastocyst, but the embryos were good for implanting as they were. They took the early blastocyst embryo and the farthest along compounding embryo and implanted those.

Some neat things:
1. Kevin got to stay in the room and watch the embryo transfer, last time he wasn't allowed in the room
2. They showed us the embryos on the TV in the room before the transfer
3. We got to watch the ultrasound and see the embryos placed in my uterus, we even got our first picture of the baby/babies if they end up taking, the gave us an ultrasound picture of the embryos in my uterus

Now is the waiting time, on February 23rd we will have the pregnancy test that will tell us if this worked or not. I really hope that it will.

Eggs -> Embryos

Yesterday we got a call from the Fertility Center where I had my eggs harvested, out of the 13 eggs they harvested only 7 were viable, and of the 7 that they fertilized only 3 made it to embryo status. It is difficult for us to know that we lost 10 eggs out of the whole process, but 3 embryos is better than none. They called me today to verify that they are going to implant the embryos on the 5th day. They could have done the implantation on the 3rd day if the embryos were not looking too great, but they must look good for them to be planning on implanting on the 5th day. Fifth day embryos are much more aggressive and have a greater chance of implanting and becoming a successful pregnancy, so they will not be implanting all three but will only implant two. There is a high chance that we will get twins out of this.

Either way I am currently on a bunch of meds, and getting daily shots in the bum from Kevin. Yay fun! It is all for a good cause though, so it is worth it.

Walking and Schedules

Lately Davy's favorite thing to do is walk around the living room with someone holding his hand. He can walk between us but he doesn't seem to feel comfortable with his new walking skills to go walking on his own. According to his doctor he should be able to walk now, he has great muscle tone and good balance but he is just chicken and will walk once he gets up his courage. In the meantime Mommy and Daddy have become his walking companions. He does not do so good when it comes to walking with Mommy or Daddy outside the living room area, because he wants to see all the things he doesn't usually get to play with. Davy has also started to climb, which is giving us all sorts of fits as he likes to climb up on the couches but has not realized that falling off the couch could seriously hurt him. There is a part of me that feels like I should let him fall once to let him learn that he needs to be careful on the couch. It is difficult letting my baby learn tough lessons.

On the fertility side of things I have begun to give myself shots. I started on Monday January 30th. Here is my schedule: Monday January 30th to Thursday February 2nd (today!) inject 200 Units of Follistim subcutaneously, Friday February 3rd inject 200 Units of Follistim, 2 pills of Estrodiol and one syringe of Ganirelix, continue all three until Monday February 6th when I have a doctor appointment and will be given a new schedule by the nurse.

Speaking of doctor appointments I am full of them for the next few weeks. I have the appointment on the 6th, as well as an appointment with my General Practitioner on the 7th, and another with the fertility clinic on the 8th. On the 9th I will be driving in to work for a meeting and then on the 10th we will be driving to Chicago for harvest of the eggs. We will be returning to Chicago on the 15th for implantation. Just thinking about next week makes me feel tired. Davy will be spending the 9th and 10th with Nana and Grandpa while I am at work and in Chicago. I am sure they will have more fun than I will.

I exercised last night and the night before. Turned on a tv show and exercised for the duration of it. I need to do more of that.

Big stuff

There are big things going on in the Sampson family. Davy just started taking some unassisted steps on his own, last night he walked on his own across a 4 foot area! I was so happy and proud of him! I do know that this means that he will be walking all over the place soon, but I am still excited for him.

On the fertility front, Kevin transported his frozen semen from one location to another. Now we are all set for our next try. I started my cycle and will be starting my daily shots tomorrow. I will probably have to continue them for two months. I will give more info tomorrow when I get my instructions on what to take.

Dodging the bullet

Or the $4738 hospital payment.

I have found that when going through any medical proceedure that requires you to go to the hospital it is so very nice to have insurance. I learned this first when we went through cancer with Kevin and a $17,000 bill came to us saying that it had all been paid by our insurance. Those are the kind of bills that stop your heart and then get it started again in a leap of joy.

So when I received my first bill for the egg extraction I had a similar reaction. 4738 dollars? Oh, wait, it is covered entirely by the insurance company, and I only have a $200 co-pay. Whew!

So imagine my surprise when I got a letter yesterday saying the following:
"The claim for this patient was reviewed based on additional information received. We have completed an adjustment, and have determined that an additional payment is not available.

*Your total responsibility to the provider of services is $4,738.18.* This total includes any amount you may have previously paid your provider for these services."

This is not the kind of letter you want to receive, especially when you have already jumped through all the necessary hoops. Done all the unpleasant tests that the insurance company required to cover you, and used the referal just like they required you to. When you have done every little thing the insurance company asked you to this is not what you want to see.

So I called the number they listed for questions. And got a lady who looked into it for me. I ended up sitting on hold for about 30 minutes while she looked at things and got things taken care of, but at the end of it all she said that it was covered, and that we didn't have to worry about it after all. Another big whew! My only worry now is that this bill was only for the egg extraction. The bill for the embryo implantation was another $3000. Hopefully I will not have to go through the same thing with that one.

They made me do it

So I was thinking back on my doctor appointment from earlier this week and some of the questions they asked me. For example they wanted to know the last day of my last period. Which I suppose most pregnant women know as it tells them how far along they are and when their baby is most likely due. But my period was started by the Fertility Clinic and the date of it has less to do with how far along I am as they had me take things to keep from having another period. In fact my due date and such is based off when the embryos were implanted. So when the nurse asked about my period I told her it was April something, but I was pretty sure there was paperwork on it somewhere. She gave me a strange look until I explained that I got pregnant through a fertility clinic and that they started my period on a certain date and had it end on a certain date so there would probably be paperwork on it. I find it interesting that there are so many parts of my pregnancy like that, where everything was scheduled for a certain time and thus everything is documented somewhere.

As follow ups to some of the things I have brought up in other posts. Regarding my extra meds, I called the Fertility Clinic to see if there was somewhere I could donate them to. And they told me I could bring them in to the clinic, so yesterday I dropped off my box of extra meds, which cleared up a big area in my house.

I finally got a chance to look through the folder that I got from the Obgyn appointment. It has a lot of helpful info such as when to call your doctor, what you can do for certain things, exercises you can do throughout pregnancy, tips on nausea, tips on baby movement counting, tips on labor and false labor and how to tell the difference. And it has a pregnancy planner, a Fit Pregnancy magazine and a magazine that goes through the different weeks of the pregnancy and what happens.

The travel pack of formula expires February of next year so if the baby does come on its due date of Jan 28th then we should be good.

Missing the Fertility Clinic already

Today was my first doctor appointment with my regular Obgyn, it was interesting. I am already missing the fertility clinic. Appointment was at 9 am. Got to the doctor’s office early, and they had me fill out paperwork. That was interesting, seeing as they were my obgyn office before I went to the fertility clinic. Filled out the paperwork, got my paperwork from the fertility clinic from the car. And sat and waited with Kevin in the waiting room. Finally about 9:30 am they called me back. A nurse asked me a bunch of questions about myself and my pregnancy and everything. One question was what is my religion. I was a bit surprised by that, but I suppose it makes sense as some religions require certain things. Then she took my blood after asking when the last time I was tested for STDs was. Then she took blood to test for that and who knows what else. So this means that within a year I have been tested three times for STDs. Then she asked me for a urine sample. The cup she gave me was odd, and I wasn’t quite sure how to work it. So I tried to use it how it seemed to work, but I got it wrong. I think I got enough urine in the cup for them by the end, but I am not sure. To give an example of how weird the cup was, I accidentally pricked my finger on the cup. That’s right, I stabbed myself with the cup hard enough to draw blood. Weird cup.

After that whole ordeal they took me and Kevin to a room where we met with the doctor and talked a bit. She discussed the pregnancy with us, and how we got pregnant, took a look at the paperwork from the fertility clinic, talked about her expectations with the pregnancy and what we should expect. Then she took us to another room where she would be giving me an exam. Inside was a paper shirt and paper lap blanket. So I put on my paper outfit and Kevin and I wait, and wait, and wait. At one point I say to Kevin, “I just love it when they put me in nothing but a paper outfit and leave me to wait for 30 minutes in a cold exam room.” He asked me if this had happened before and I said, “Yes, but it is better this time because I have someone to talk to while I wait.” Finally the doctor came in and gave me my exam, which was more like a physical, with PAP smear and everything. I asked her a few more questions, about exercise, and pregnancy tea, and sleeping positions. Yes I can exercise on the elliptical, but I have to start slowly, no she didn’t know anything about pregnancy tea, as for sleeping positions I can sleep however I want to just as long as I get lots of sleep. Then she gave me a folder full of stuff, a travel bag with what looked like formula in it (weird), and told me to make another appointment for three weeks from then.

So my next appointment is on the 29th and my next ultrasound is in September at my 20 week mark. I want to see the baby sooner, but I guess I will have to wait. Yes, I miss the fertility clinic greatly. Speaking of which I need to call them and see if I can donate my excess fertility meds somewhere. We don’t need them and probably won’t need them for another few years. So I want to get them out of the house as we need to get the house ready for selling.

No more shots!

So I had my exit appointment with my fertility doctor. She gave me a gift, told me congratulations (this is the first time I had seen her since she put the embryos in me), gave me the stuff that I need to take to my first appointment with my regular Obgyn, and told me I could stop the progesterone shots.

Yay for no more shots!! It is the first time since April that I will not be sticking metal needles into me! Yay for that!

I am not sure how I feel about going back to my regular OB, I will miss the prompt service of the fertility clinic. They asked me to contact them when I have my baby and let them know that it arrived healthy. I will happily do so, they are the ones who got me pregnant, they should know when I have the baby.

My next appointment is next Tuesday, right after the holiday weekend. This weekend's plans involve Rochelle and hanging out with the family. Should be fun!

Nausea Meds

Yesterday was good in regards to vomiting, none happened, but I felt sick most of the day. This past weekend was so bad that I finally broke down this morning and called the fertility clinic and asked them to give me nausea meds. So when work is over I can go to my local Walgreens and pick up some nausea meds. I am so happy about that. It will be nice to have a little bit of a break from all of this.

This Thursday is my next and last appointment with the fertility clinic, and this weekend shoud be the end to my progesterone shots. That will be nice.

It is kind of funny, for Christmas last year Kevin's mom sent me an Anne Geddes calendar, which as you might know is full of babies as that is what she photographs. She said it was in hope that something might happen this year. I have used it as my work calendar and I have to say that it is very fitting. Especially since I use it for writing down all my doctor appointments so that my managers and my co-workers know where I am on any given day.

So, yay for meds, yay for shots ending soon!

8 weeks

Yesterday I went to my third ultrasound appointment. My baby is now the size of an olive or grape and looks as the ultrasound tech said, like peanut with legs and arms. The appointment went strange compared to how it usually goes. The usual ultrasound tech was on vacation and so their back up tech was filling in for her. She was unfamiliar with that specific machine and got frustrated during the ultrasound. This resulted in me not being able to see anything except for the picture she printed out for me, which Kevin said later was not a very good picture of the baby. It makes me kind of bummed out, but it is ok. Kevin was able to be there and he was able to see it all he even got to see the heart beat this time. Since he missed the last ultrasound I am glad he was able to be at this one.

Ironically after the appointment Kevin and I went to get lunch and ended up at the toll road oasis. He got chicken strips and I got a smoothie and a pretzel. Here is the ironic/sort of gross part, one of his chicken strips looked like the silhouette of the baby in the ultrasound picture. Kevin shared his chicken strips with me, but I was unwilling to eat that strip. I could not eat it when it looked like my baby (even if it was a chickeny, breaded version).

I am currently 8 weeks 3 days along. At 10 weeks I get to stop my progesterone shots/injections, and hopefully at 12 weeks I will stop getting sick. Hopefully. Next week is my last appointment with the Fertility Clinic, and the week after that is my first appointment with my regular OBGYN. I am hoping for another ultrasound at that time, but we will see. By that time I should be off the progesterone. Yay!

I need to find a better scanner to scan the ultrasound pics onto the computer. Once I do then I will post the last two ultrasound pics. Until then you will just have to be patient.

Other things learned at doctor's visit

I am 5 weeks 6 days along, the baby is at six week size.
My due date is January 28th. I don't know if we have many January birthdays in our family or Kevin's family. In fact I don't know that we have any in our family. This also means that I will be my biggest during the winter, something I have heard as being a good thing.

I am continuing the progresterone in oil shots. I had to call for a refill this morning. I also requested a new sharps container, more needles and syringes, and alcohol wipes. I have my own alcohol wipes but I like their's better. Also discovered that Kevin perfers Johnson and Johnson sterile gause wipes, as opposed to the Walgreens brand.

Found out that when it comes to exercise they really only want me walking. When Kevin asked about using the eliptical they said no. I think I have exercised using the eliptical twice during the pregnancy, maybe it is a good thing I haven't done more. Looks like I need to do more walking though.

1st Ultrasound of the baby

Today was my first ultrasound to see the baby. It turned out that it was an internal ultrasound. They told us that they were looking for the yolk sac and they were able to find one. So we are having one baby. It was awesome to see the little thing that will become our baby. Right now it looks like a grain of rice. We were also able to see the heartbeat. I guess today was the first day we would have been able to see it! How exciting. I think the best part of it all was watcing Kevin as the ultrasound techs showed him what he was looking at, he had this look of happy awe on his face the entire time. They pointed out the baby, and the yolk sac and the heartbeat. They said that the heartbeat is currently at 90 beats per minute. They also took a picture of the baby for us. I have the picture below, the little white thing inside the red circle is the baby, the black area around it is the yolk sac. My next ultrasound is scheduled for next week. I can't wait to see how much the baby will have grown!

Ultrasound tomorrow

Tomorrow is my first ultrasound since finding out that I am pregnant. To say it is my first ultrasound would be untruthful though as I have had many internal ultrasounds since starting our attempts at getting pregnant through the fertility clinic, and I had an external ultrasound during the implantation of the embryos.

Tomorrow is the ultrasound that should show me how many babies I have in there. There were two embryos implanted, so we could have one baby, or we could have two, or if the embryos split we could have three or even four. We could have more than four as well, but I am pretty sure that will not happen.

It still seems crazy to me that this early on they can do an ultrasound and discover how many babies we will be having. I have feelings on how many it will be, but I am not going to say what those feelings are until tomorrow. I don't want to jinx it. This week has been a good bit stressful, what with a very important meeting at work this morning and the spotting that happened earlier this week. But the meeting is now over, and the spotting has for the most part gone away. I am feeling better about it all. Still worried, but better.

Tomorrow should show that everything is ok, and should tell us how many babies we have to look forward to. I will be asking the doctor a bunch of questions as well, most important of those being, "Can I get off the progesterone shots? Because 1. They hurt, and 2. I am running out of the medication itself." Hopefully the answer is a good one. Either way I wil probably have an overnight shipment of progesterone to me, I might ask for a sharps container while I am at it. It depends on what she prescribes me.

Artificial Insemination or IVF?

Today we met with the doctor to discuss where we go from here. She initially started talking about artificial insemination and using six vials to do so. We have 12 vials so this would use half of them on three attempts. Kevin got concerned at this point and so we talked about other options. We discussed IVF (In Vetro Fertilization) and what our options were with that. We went round and round with it and then settled on a decision. We are going to start me on Clomid which will increase my fertility, we will do one attempt at Artificial Insemination and then if that does not work we will start me on the process for IVF in May. I guess the clinic does IVF in groups of women and so they do it during different months so the earliest she could get me into was March, but she didn’t feel comfortable in rushing it so instead we are going to try for May.

This effectively gives us a plan A and a plan B. If I get pregnant from the Artificial Insemination then we will not do the IVF in May, if I don’t get pregnant then we will. I am thinking that if we do get pregnant through AI then maybe after we have the baby I will go through the process of harvesting the eggs next year just so that we have them saved for future children attempts. That way we have the eggs from when I am still young and fertile.

Hopefully by next year I not be working and the harvesting process will not be as much of an interference in my life as it is now. We shall see.

If plan A works then we could be pregnant late February to early March, if plan B works then we could be pregnant late May early June. Hopefully the sooner the better, but we will see how it goes.

Bleh

Woke up this morning, felt slightly sick, like how I feel if I have not eaten yet. So I ate some cherry yogurt and started to feel really sick, like nauseous sick. Lay in bed for awhile while Kevin made me some chicken soup. When it was finished he talked me into coming downstairs to eat it where I ended up throwing up in the sink. Discovered that cherry yogurt is not as nasty to throw up as pretty much anything else is. Ate the soup and some water. Feeling better but not completely normal.

Called the Fertility Clinic this week to see if the shipment had made it out there yet. Nope. So I called the U of U hospital and they said that they have been playing phone tag with the Fertility Clinic. So I called up the Fertility Clinic and left a message asking them to call the U of U hospital. Hopefully if things work out the vials will be shipped on Monday (which is what U of U told us last week) so we will see. If they don't get shipped I will be calling the Fertility Clinic and the U of U hospital daily to get them to contact each other. I might even see if I can do a three way call just to get them in touch with each other. We have already lost two months to them not getting this done, I really don't feel like wasting a third. I mean we have done everything to get this moving and we still keep losing week after week to incompetence. If this continues I will make sure that they make it a priority to get this done, if just to get me to leave them alone. Grrrr.

Vial Shipment Request

These were humorous enough that I wanted to share them. Recently Kevin and I have been trying to get his vials of sperm shipped from Utah to Illinois, this is really the only thing keeping us from getting pregnant right now. One of the last things that they needed from us, which we got to them a few weeks ago, was a letter from Kevin stating that he wanted his vials of sperm shipped from Utah to the Fertility Clinic in IL. So he wrote three letters, one of them serious and the other two fairly off the wall. I am going to share them here:

Serious one:

To whom it may concern,

My name is Kevin (our last name). Per your request, I am writing this letter requesting that my vials of frozen semen be transferred from your location at:

(U of U Hospital Andrology Labs address)

Please ship them to this location:
(Fertility clinic’s address)

Thank you,
Kevin

1st silly one

To whom it may concern,

My name is Kevin (our last name). It is my understanding that you have in your possession my long lost frozen hopes for posterity. I have longed to be reunited with my beloved sperm popsicles. Many a tear-filled night has passed in the long years we have been apart. Please, I beg for your mercy! Please send them to live in freedom with me and my wife! Please bring an end to our mourning! We have already delivered the ransom that you specified, and plead with you to honor your side of the agreement.

Please forward said hostages and ship them from your location at:
(U of U Hospital Andrology Labs address)

And forward them to this location, where we will be joyfully reunited with them:
(Fertility clinic’s address)

Respectfully yours.
Kevin

2nd silly one

Dear Infidels,

Give me back my frozen sperm! Give them back or I will destroy you and everything that you love! Do not underestimate my powers!

It is my intent to liberate my faithful little crew of swimmers from this location:
(U of U Hospital Andrology Labs address)

And have them shipped to this location:
(Fertility clinic’s address)

Your cooperation will earn you your lives! Fail to heed my demands and you will know the full weight of my wrath and fury! Do not try my patience!!

Regards,
Kevin

Consult at the Fertility Clinic

"You look perfect", she said
looking over charts
flipping through pages
of tests and documentation,
she speaks on of plans,
what he now needs to do,
checking counts and depending on
how many swimmers whether we go
one way or the other
and yet through all of the plans
all of the talk of samples,
shipping and semen,
all the considerations
of which proceedure would be worse
echoing through it all
is the word perfect
in the ears of a little girl
who thought she was broken.

Fertility Clinic

Had my first appointment with the fertility clinic today. It went really well, I met my doctor, a very sweet woman who sat me down and asked me a bunch of questions and got to know my story and learned about how Kevin and I have been trying for so long to have children. She really put it into perspective for me when after I told her how long we had been trying she said, "Wait, you have been trying to have children for almost 10 years?"

She gave me a game plan for the next little while, they are going to do more tests on me, check Kevin's semen again, check my tubes again(eek!), and with everything going smoothly we should be able to make our first attempt to get pregnant in December. I am excited about everything and hope that it all goes well.

Doctor's Appt and Wii

Yesterday I went to the doctor for a check up and to have some tests run. These are the tests that need to be done for my fertility treatments. One of the tests for Cystic Fibrosis is quite expensive and so I am going to check with the Fertility clinic to see if it is absolutely nessisary to have it done. I am hoping not. While I was there I got a little bit of a better idea of what I might have to go through for the Invetro, it sound that I will be placed under sedation for the egg retreival, which makes me wonder what it will be like.

On a lighter note I was able to have my doctor prescribe the Wii Fit for me as a treatment for losing weight. Because of this I will most likely be able to have my flex spending plan pay for it. I plan on using it in conjunction with my eliptical, I am trying to get to the point where I am working 30 minutes a day on the eliptical and 30 minutes on the Wii, currently I am up to about 20 minutes on the eliptical and 20 minutes on the Wii. I am going to try to get up a little higher today on the eliptical, and see if I can get to 30 min on the Wii.

(Update: I received a call from my doctor's office about my tests and the fertility clinic I wanted to use. From them I was able to obtain the fertility clinic's phone number and call them about the cystic fibrosis test. The clinic said that the test was optional but not needed, basically if I had it done then they would like the results but otherwise they did not need them. Yay for that. This means I just have to go in on Friday morning and have some blood drawn and then I should be ready in regard to all my tests needed for my fertility clinic requirements. I am happy that I am getting closer.)

Doctor's Appointment

Yesterday I had the appointment that I have been dreading. And yes it was as bad as they had told me.

So I go in and they have me get into a gown and then take me to the room where they will be doing the proceedure, it is an x-ray room and an x-ray table on which they have set up a little bed of sorts. The doctor's assistant lays me down on the bed and talks me through the proceedure, she gives me about the same explaination as my obgyn had given me. Then we wait for the obgyn who is doing the proceedure to come in. When he (yes he) comes in he gives me a more detialed explaination of the whole thing. He explains that the catheder that he will be putting up into my cervix will be held in place by a little balloon which will cause me cramps, he also tells me that he will be injecting contrast (dye of sorts) into my uterus to see if it overflows into my fallopian tubes. After explaining things he starts to get everything ready for the proceedure, then he has the assistant go and get the radiologist (who is a man). Once the radiologist comes into the room I get into the "position" and the proceedure starts. So here I am, who have never had a male obgyn with two guys, who are complete strangers to me, looking at my "hooha" (as my sister calls it). The obgyn puts the catheder up through my cervix and then lets me know that he is inflating the balloon, what follows is the most intense cramping I have as of yet felt, and I have pretty extreme menstral cramps, they are so painful I feel like throwing up and I start crying out in pain. The Doctor's assistant is there trying to comfort me and I can hear the obgyn talking quickly and talking about the contrast and seeing if they can see it spill over, finally, after truthfully not too long it spills and they take everything out. For me it was a bit of a blur as I was trying to block out the pain and being pretty unsuccessful. After they finish the men leave the room and I lay there in pain and realize I have broken out in a cold sweat. The Doctor's assistant comforts me a bit more and tells me I can use the bathroom that is right off the x-ray room to change and clean up. After it is all over I end up cramping for another 2 to 3 hours and then everything calms down.

Good news is they know right away that I am healthy and my tubes are both open. And luckily I only cramped the day of and not at all today. But oh, if they have to use the same proceedure to impregnate me I dont think I will be looking forward to that at all. Sometimes I really wish we could go about this the easy, cheap and enjoyable way and just have sex to have kids. Blah.
